Rochelle and I are super excited to announce that we’re expecting a little one! Yep, there’s going to be a little “Scroche” running around in the fairly near future. We’re obviously pretty excited, but it’s a little scary, too. Big changes on the horizon!
Rochelle writes below:
When are you due?
The due date is May 15th, 2013
Are you going to find out the sex of the baby?
We are going to find out the sex so we can better prepare the house and our minds.
Is Jobe excited?
Jobe has known of the possibility of us having a child for 3 or 4 years. We have him totally bought in 😉
Is Scott excited?
Of course! We’re both super excited and scared too. A new person to train up in the ways of right and wrong in all areas of life. (Scott’s note- I can’t wait to see what he/she will look like – hoping my nose doesn’t get passed on…)
Has Rochelle been sick?
I wish I could be one of those pregnant moms who do not have morning sickness. I am not so lucky. I have had days on the couch where lifting my head threatened vomit. I have also had days where I feel great. I hope for the great days and do what I can on the sick days. Ironically, liver has been the one food (I do not like) that has seemed to make morning sickness better.
Have you been eating strict Paleo through the pregnancy?
With being so sick, I have had to find foods that would go down and stay down. Meat was pretty difficult so I had to eat it really, really slowly and force myself to swallow each bite. Therefore, to keep my calories up I have had to go to dairy. For a while, Scott and I have consumed rice of various kinds, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other tubers. So not exactly modern popular “Paleo”.
How do you treat cravings?
I usually try to analyze the craving. An example: I woke up at 4 am about a week ago wanting tuna fish with mayo and sweet relish. I could not go back to sleep even though I ate some nut butter. So at 5 am (I was at my friend’s house), I made myself some tuna fish. I felt satisfied and was able to go back to sleep for a couple more hours. Who knows why I wanted that…maybe I was low in protein.
*I have 1 day per week where I can have a sugar treat. I try to stay gluten free.
Have you had any food aversions?
I have had food aversions. My biggest aversion is to garlic and onions. The smell of garlic cooking, sitting raw in the fridge, being cut, on someone’s breath can lead to a sudden desire to vomit. I have figured out how to breathe through my mouth because I can’t make everyone around me not eat garlic 😉 (Scott’s note – I can’t wait to eat garlic, onion, and spices again someday)
What have you been doing for training while pregnant?
I wish, once again, that I could be one of those moms who seem able to Crossfit throughout pregnancy. My body is tired and I have to respect it’s desire to rest and grow a new person, rather than repairing damage from intense training. Therefore I have switched my training to a more classic body building routine with a focus on strengthening my back. Scott W. the amazing flexibility expert has also written me a flexibility program because I will not roll out and stretch if left to my own devices.
Oh, I need to mention that I LOVE soccer. I played until I was 9 weeks. Then, after much discussion with my loving and wonderful husband I decided to do what felt like the best decision for the baby. Soccer left me really tired for 2 days straight. There is no way to modify soccer to 80% of effort. I could not let a girl score because I wanted to play at 80%. The jock in me steps onto a field and only knows one speed, one intensity and I could not change that. This was by far the most difficult decision, because it was something that I really, really wanted to do, but it was looking like my playing could be hindering my body’s ability to grow a healthy child. After a discussion with my midwife, I told my team I was out for the season 🙁 SAD! I miss you team!
Any last comments?
I have watched those women who seem able to do it all while pregnant. I had to decide to swallow my pride and say “that is not me”. My body has seen some really hard competition. It has gone through some difficult times in life, and I need to respect the place that my body is at.
For those of you who think you will push through, I want to remind you that everyday your body is pushing. It is pushing to grow a little human. You have the power to make the human resilient to stress, insulin sensitive, smart, healthy and strong. You also have the ability to make the little human sickly, unable to handle stress, insulin resistant, and weak**. I choose to take it easy so that my baby can be as strong as possible. All of us pregnant women have this choice.
**Scott’s note-stress the mother is under during pregnancy significantly effect how your child will respond to stress thru their whole life, as well as how their children will handle stress. If you place your body under heavy stress during pregnancy (training or otherwise), your child will be born with and always have a heightened stress response. Not a good thing – a more potent secretion of stress hormones anytime they encounter any of the small, daily life stressors.
