Jason, our resident yogi, penned the following shout out to double X.

During classes this last month, many of you have no doubt noticed a hulking, shave-headed Adult Male barking and growling at a racked barbell.

Xi Xia, Crossfit gym co-owner and, at just more than 200 pounds, a certified Adult Male, has embarked on a stripped-down Eastern European-style training program that is basically daily max-effort back-squats. That means a soul-crushing regimen of heavy back-squats every single day, 7 days a week, no Sundays off.

I’ve had the fortune to train with the guy for more than 2 years now, and I’ve yet to hear a grown man emit sounds as frightening as those that come from XX during the heat and pain of a workout. He groans, whimpers, and outright mewls like a baby lamb being slaughtered. The guy crushes himself during workouts, and it’s both humbling and motivating.

So it’s my duty to report that Xi Xia’s been utterly smashing PRs lately. Almost every day he’s blown past weights at which he’d previously been plateaued.

After 4 weeks, on Christmas Eve he pushed his back-squat to a PR of 364. He’s also PR’d his front squat, his clean, and his snatch.

This onslaught of new PRs is also more ridiculous when you consider that, this summer, he tore knee meniscus.

So Xi Xia’s having a big month. Give him a pat on the back.

Let’s also take a moment to recognize that Xi Xia plays a huge part in cultivating the fitness, health and, most importantly, wellness that many of us have developed at Crossfit Portland.

Crossfit defines fitness and health as our ability to “move large loads quickly throughout our lives.” Most of us recognize that fitness and health run alongside but are ultimately separate from our quality of life.

Meaning, what use is a 3-minute Fran if you’re miserable?

A fundamental part of quality of life, and therefore wellness, is participation in and sense of belonging to a community.

Xi Xia welcomes both beginners and experienced gym members alike. He constantly works to become stronger, faster, and more flexible. Most importantly, that drive for self-betterment isn’t an attempt to prove himself or defeat others. Rather, it stems from curiosity and interest.

Thankfully, Xi Xia’s committed to sharing that passion and curiosity. So give the guy a fist-bump next time you see him. He’s not just helping you get fitter and healthier, he’s improving your wellness … and remember, if you walk into the gym and hear the mad gibbering of a demon-spawn, just relax. No one’s possessed, being tortured or dying.

  1. Nice work, DMX. Keep breaking knees, calling fouls and scoring. I’m a proud friend. We’re doing a similar tabata today at WCCF, so I’ll be thinking about you as I work.

  2. You rock XX! Congrats on all the PRs and thanks for being so great. I look up to you a lot in your training 🙂 Happy New Year CFP!

  3. thanks for the support and well wishes. Tried for a 373 PR on the back squat today…couldn’t quite get it but I can see it around the corner!

Training wouldn’t nearly be this successful and fun without this community here to support, heckle, and generally make you feel like you are not alone.

  4. A big fist bump, XX! I’m a big fan of your Eastern European “Take No Prisoners” approach. Way to go on your PR’s! You’re an inspiration to everyone.

  5. Yo Xi Xia,
Way to go! Huge fist bump from Denmark to you and your animal-like demon war cries!

  6. Awesome XX, back to having fun! Sounds like you’re enjoying your training, or at least the PR’s 😉 Good stuff.

  7. Xi Xia,

Way to go!! That is awesome! I fully appreciate the way you encourage and challenge all of us to push harder. Plus, you walk the talk. I like that about you! 🙂

On a side note, I was talking with my brother while I was gone about training, and your name came up (of course). He asked if you had any personal redemption of late… Confused, I said I wasn’t sure. He said, “Well, if he had, he could make a movie called the Xi Xia Redemption”. Ha-ha! 🙂

    Jason, great post.
